WEST VALLEY JRS.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is West Valley Jrs.?

West Valley Jrs. is a volleyball club that competes within the Columbia Empire Region of USA Volleyball (CEVA), which covers Oregon and Southwest Washington.

When and where does West Valley Jrs. practice?

We will have a 12u, two 14u teams, a 16u team, and an 18u team. We practice at Valley Catholic, St. Pius, and The Courts (on the corner of Murray and Millikan.) Generally practices will be twice a week, Tuesdays or Thursdays at The Courts and Sundays at Valley Catholic or St. Pius. If the team competes in a tournament on the weekend, then there will be no Sunday practice.

How long is the season?

The regional season goes from November through April. During November and December we do team organization, practices, refereeing and scorekeeping clinics. Beginning in January there will be tournaments approximately twice a month (Saturday’s mostly, but also on Sunday’s), and practices once or twice a week.

Optionally, a team may elect to participate in the Volleyball Festival in Reno the last week of June, beginning of July.   A team electing to go could practice once or twice a week in May and June and compete in one or more tournaments. The Festival expenses are separate from the club dues for the regional season. The decision to go to the Festival will be made by the team and coaches some time in January in order to get the registration in by the deadline.

Where are the tournaments?

We play teams from other clubs registered with the Columbia Empire Region. We compete in a Power League tournament once a month, where you are matched with teams of very equal level making for the best competition. The other tournaments are CEVA sanctioned tournaments around the area. The tournaments may be held in Longview WA, Portland, Beaverton, Forest Grove, Newberg, Salem, and Eugene areas. In February we will also travel to Yakima to compete in a two-day tournament.

Tournaments are played on either Saturdays or Sundays. Teams play several matches (4-6 matches) on that day, typically starting around 8:00 am and finishing around 6 pm.

How much does West Valley Jrs. cost?

The club dues are $650. The dues cover the cost of registration, uniforms, tournament entry fees, equipment, gym rental, and coach’s expenses. If a team decides to go to more than 2 tournaments a month, or to a larger tournament requiring a hotel stay then additional fees will have to be collected. $150 is due after the team is selected, $300 at the first practice, and the remaining $200 by December 15th . Make checks payable to West Valley Jrs.

What if a West Valley Jrs. activity conflicts with a school activity?

Schoolwork and activities are a top priority, but it is expected that advanced notice be given to the coach when a club activity is going to be missed. We expect the players to be committed to the team, so every effort should be made to stay current on all schoolwork and activities so that they can be present at all practices and tournaments. Missing a practice or a tournament affects not just the player, but also the entire team.

How many girls are on a team?

The number of girls on a team could vary from 9-12 players. We try to match up players with equivalent skills, and like to keep the number down to about 10 players to ensure the most amounts of playtime and improvement for each player. This is a competitive junior Olympic program not a recreational league, so playtime is not going to be equal for all players. Focus is put on the development of the team as well as the individual player.
